John raymond/s. Carey masterclass
“John Raymond and Sean Carey were absolutely wonderful with our students—generous, caring, and deeply humble. They took the time to truly get to know our students and meet them where they were, creating a meaningful and supportive learning environment. When the full Shadowlands band joined us, the experience was truly magical, especially sharing the stage with students at our jazz night, where each member brought a unique energy and had so much to offer. I’ve since heard from many in our community who were genuinely moved by how much they loved the concert.”

Evolution of a Song
John and Sean will walk through how they created songs from SHADOWLANDS. By sharing never-before-heard demos, they will give students a behind-the-scenes look into how each song started and how it developed. They will also share about how they collaborated and combined both jazz and singer/songwriter approaches to the compositional, recording, and production aspects of the album.
Navigating the Modern Music Industry
John and Sean will share first-hand experience and practical tips on releasing your own music, booking, touring, marketing/promotion, developing an audience, and sustaining a career in the modern music industry.
Ensemble Coaching
The Shadowlands band will coach students on ensemble playing by listening to them play, giving concrete feedback and discussing specific musical topics within the context of playing in a group, and play alongside students.
Songwriting, Composition, and Production
Something here about working interactively with students on these ideas, lending our experience and knowledge to help them flesh out their own music
Health & Wellness for Artists
We did a thing at the Knox residency where we created a space for everyone to share health and wellness-related challenges they've had as artists. It was a very moving and powerful time...lots of vulnerability, encouragement to each other, and positivity. It felt important to acknowledge and name the struggles we have and to share ways that we've worked through them. Many people reflected afterwards how they never talk about this stuff in music school and how needed/refreshing it was.
